Volunteer

Our volunteers are ages 18-80 and come from all walks of life. Whether you prefer a structured routine or more flexible, decide-as-you-go volunteering, we have opportunities to match your schedule. To hear more or to sign up to volunteer, contact Tammy Duran, Volunteer Coordinator. You can also sign up online.

We need:

Volunteer Drivers for Meals on Wheels

This is very popular and you will be joining a huge crowd of wonderful people from all over the city who deliver hot meals to seniors. This can be done twice a month, every day or however often you’d like to sign up. We also need people just to be on our sub list for when others call in sick. It requires a 2-hour time commitment once a day (10 am-noon) for as many days as you like each month

VIP Rides Volunteers

This typically involves picking up a senior, taking them shopping or to a medical appointment and helping them as they need (not during the actual appointment) with visual guidance, a steady arm, reaching for groceries, or pushing a wheelchair. VIP Rides volunteers serve on an as-needed basis. You tell the coordinator what times might be open for you and when she gets a request, she calls you. If something has come up, that’s fine, we move to the next volunteer.

Friendly Visitors

Our Friendly Visitor Coordinator does an intake with every volunteer applicant and every senior applicant. He finds out what people’s views are on life, what they are interested in, what lights them or used to light them. You are able to see the bios of seniors and choose the one you think you would like as a friend. Volunteers give 2 hours per week at whatever time suits both people.

Here are just a few of the reasons we’ve heard from our volunteers.

  • “to meet new people”
  • “to show my kids what’s right”
  • “to keep busy between jobs”
  • “To give back”
  • “to pay it forward”
  • “because LIFE helped my mom”
  • “to connect with my city”
  • “to learn new things”
  • or “because that’s what people do”

Whatever the reason; our volunteers give in a way that makes them feel good and strengthens our neighborhoods. We hope you can join us!
