CARING FOR THE SOUL

Emily begins her day at 7 o'clock each morning. By 9 a.m. she starts work with Grace, with whom she has worked for almost three years now. Unlike most employers, Grace is 86 years old and lives at home. When Emily was first employed by Grace, she needed just a little help around the house. Now, however, Grace needs more care. In addition to cleaning the house, Emily gives Grace a bath, changes her diapers and fixes a small meal . . . all in three hours. Grace needs more help, but she is on a limited income and can only afford Emily three hours a day at $8.00 per hour. Emily is fortunate to make this much as a caregiver, as most caregivers working for In-Home Supportive Services make only $6.00 per hour.

When Emily was asked why she chooses to work as a caregiver, when she could earn higher wages at most any other job, she responded, "I like taking care of people that need my help. It makes me feel good about myself and it's nice to know that you have contributed to the quality of someone's day."
