Friendly Visitors - Goals

The Friendly Visitors program was initiated by LIFE ElderCare, Inc. in 1985. Volunteers can choose the isolated senior they wish to visit - preferably an hour or two on a weekly basis. Other activities can include reassuring phone calls, shopping trips or lunch dates. These are real friendships that truly can bring joy and satisfaction to both parties. Currently there are over 100 matches in place, but more volunteers are needed as the elder population continues to grow.

The goal of our program is to provide companionship and friendship to isolated seniors in the Tri-City Area, thus enabling them to live independently, with dignity, in their own homes and apartments for as long as possible. At year-end 1999, our Friendly Visitors Program recorded:

- 6,000 visiting hours
- 3,500 phone calls
- 1,000 errands/outings
A
total of 10,500 hours of services provided.

"It perhaps should be called "soul mates for seniors" as some very special relationships have developed over the years."

Our Mission

To be a source of independence, dignity and voice for the social and economic needs of disabled and frail senior citizens in the Tri-City Area of Fremont, Newark and Union city.
