About the Program
Lavender Seniors provides social support services and a vibrant caring community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) older adults.
Our programs foster a sense of belonging for all LGBTQ older adults, particularly those who are isolated, vulnerable, disabled and at risk.
Feel overwhelmed caring for your female partner? Don’t feel like you fit in at the usual support groups? Lavender Seniors of the East Bay is proud to announce its first support group for Women caring for their woman partners.
Creating a Welcoming Healthcare Practice for LGBT Seniors
A one of a kind training film produced and released by Lavender Seniors in May 2015!
In these modern times, why in the world would LGBTQ people keep their identity hidden from their doctor? Here’s why: If you endure decades of being called sick or sinful, it’s hard not to develop a fear of revealing your authentic self. And harder still to do so in the vulnerable context of healthcare. As a result, LGBTQ elders are at a very high risk of unresolved mental and physical health issues.
With the support of the Alameda County Behavioral Health Services Innovation Grants, Lavender Seniors of the East Bay has written and directed a short, dynamic teaching film for both licensed and non-licensed professionals to better understand the needs of LGBTQ seniors, practice more effective communication, and create a clinical environment that communicates a sense of safety and welcome.
This 45-minute course allows California health care professionals to meet the requirements of CA Assembly Bill 496 – LGBT Cultural Competency for Health Care Providers.
