About four years ago, Bobbie took a real bad fall and was in the hospital for a few days. “Living independently is very important to me so I am doing all I can to stay in my own home for as long as possible,” she says. “If I knew someone who would benefit from a program like this, I would recommend them highly.”

Guadalupe 76, is now able to walk around her home without pain. Prior to joining the Fall Prevention program she had a hard time getting out of bed and out of chairs, and as a result had gained twenty pounds. She is now able to cook, go shopping and attend church. She also lost the twenty extra pounds — and had one of her hips replaced! (This interview is in Spanish).

Barbara Hauser has been working with Fall Prevention clients for seven years and has helped over 2,000 people. “Older people have a great fear of falling, so we usually start with simple seated exercises until they feel safe. The benefits of this program are many; people lose their fear of falling, they can be more independent in their homes, and they can start to reconnect with their community.”

All Unitek College LVN students do their community service hours with LIFE ElderCare. “I think the seniors enjoy many things about this program. They enjoy improving their physical condition and enjoy being able to do things and engage in activities they were not able to do before,” says Britt. “I also think they appreciate someone who comes into their home who cares for them and wants to help them.”

Dianne, Martin, MD, has been practicing in Fremont, CA for 27 years. “I recommend the Fall Prevention program to many of my patients. Having the nursing students come to their home makes the seniors more excited to participate; they look forward it. I would like to see other physicians ask people if they have had a fall, just as a screening test. If someone has had a fall, it’s a good opening to start talking about the program. Once a physician refers a person to the Fall Prevention program, it’s very easy. Whatever we can do to keep seniors independent in their own homes is certainly a plus.”
